Agriculture in the Global Economy
Bread for the World Insitute's
13th annual report on the state of world hunger
Agriculture in the Global Economy: Hunger 2003 says that the huge commodity subsidies in industrialized countries are hurting poor farmers in developing countries and are not the best way to deal with poverty and economic decline in rural America. Increasing development assistance to poor countries and making the rules that govern agricultural trade better match their needs and priorities would allow them to reap agriculture’s economic and food security benefits. These changes result in a win-win situation for poor and rich countries alike. Through its analysis of today’s global agricultural system, including U.S. farm policy and the global rules that monitor agricultural trade, its breakdown of hunger hotspots and updated data tables, Hunger 2003 challenges U.S. leadership to enact change that improves the well-being of poor and hungry people everywhere.
