How Much is Enough?
Hungering for God in an Affluent Culture
By Art Simon How can we follow Christ in a materialistic culture? Bread for the World founder and president emeritus Arthur Simon has written a new book to help answer that question.
How Much Is Enough? Hungering for God in an Affluent Culture points out that while possessions may capture our hearts, they are unable to nourish our souls or give us joy. In Simon's keen analysis, our consumer society is set against the backdrop of a world in which 840 million people are chronically undernourished.
"The apostle Paul expressed alarm about Christians in Corinth who, in celebrating the Lord's Supper, stuck to customary class distinctions and ate and drank beyond enough, while poorer brothers and sisters went hungry – a remarkable snapshot of our world today," he writes.
How Much Is Enough? has been called "Superb. The distilled wisdom of a lifetime… a powerfully simple book" (Ronald J. Sider) and "direct, concrete, deeply rooted, and compelling" (Walter Brueggemann).
Simon sees prosperity as a gift from God, but a gift to be used in praise of the Giver, whose love extends to all. As he puts it, "We are human beings, not human havings. God loves us for who we are, not what we have."
